All You Need to Know about Diet after The Accordion Weight Loss Procedure

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is a weight loss therapy that reduces the size of the stomach using an endoscopic suturing device. The Accordion Procedure recreates what would occur with traditional surgical sleeve gastrectomy, but without the need for surgery. The procedure can help patients to lose an average of 18 percent of their total body weight within one to two years, reduce their systolic blood pressure, and improve their overall health. But, all these benefits are associated with a patient’s commitment to eating healthy and following a strict diet plan. In this blog post, we look at everything patients should know about diet after the accordion procedure. Read on!

Immediately After ESG

People who have undergone ESG can take sugar-free clear liquids like water or ice chips four hours after the surgery. Patients can also take diet iced tea, propel water, broth, and sugar-free Popsicles or Jell-O as much as they wish. Doctors recommend avoiding gulping after the surgery as this increases the amount of swallowed air (and subsequent belching) which can be uncomfortable. Patients should follow this diet plan for a week.

Weeks 2-4 after ESG

If there are no prior complications or problems, patients may progress to a low-fat diet including soft low sugar for weeks two-four. The meals should be soft and can be mashed with a spoon or fork. Also, the meals should be low in sugar (less than 4-5 grams per meal) and low in fat (less than 6 grams). Patients can include eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, canned fruits, and soft fish in their diet but should avoid items with high fructose and trans-fats. The meal can also have 12-20 grams of protein after week two.

After Week 4 from ESG

After the fourth week, patients can start a solid low sugar and low-fat diet which includes meats, protein powder, potatoes, beans and legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Doctors recommend taking three meals a day and each meal should include a maximum four-grams of carbohydrates, six grams of fat, and 12-20 grams of protein. Patients should chew food well and eat slowly after the surgery to prevent vomiting and indigestion.

Wrap Up

It is important to remember that the Accordion procedure is a suturing where the stomach is reduced to a narrow tube and its reservoir function is greatly curtailed. The procedure yields results because the food storage capacity of the stomach is reduced. Therefore, it is important to eat less and restrict the amount of calories. A proper diet plan along with an effective exercise schedule can help ESG patients record quick and long-term results. Also, the results may vary from person to person and are based on the surgery type and the compliance with the aftercare program. If you are looking to go for ESG, look no further than MISA Dallas.
