Life After

Whether we talk about Dallas or any other place, weight loss surgery represents ray of hope for individuals who have overly high BMIs, and are unable to lose weight despite their best efforts. Other people who might need this kind of surgery are those who have a weight related condition such as Type-2 diabetes. Also called “Bariatric surgery”, weight loss surgery has different types, some of which we will discuss in this article. Read on.

1.  Adjustable Gastric Band

In this procedure, an adjustable band is kept around the top of your stomach. This band controls how much food goes into a patient’s stomach. Because of this, patient’s intake of food is limited in the long run. This is the only kind of weight loss surgery wherein a foreign object is left inside a person’s body.

2.  Gastric Sleeve

Most of the stomach is removed in this type of weight loss surgery and only a narrow section is left, which is called the sleeve. The procedure also curbs the production of ghrelin, which is the hunger hormone. A person, therefore, feels less hungry, in addition to their stomach’s capacity to hold food being reduced.

3.  Gastric Bypass

The doctor performing this procedure surgically bypasses a part of the stomach reducing the its capacity to hold food. The portion left is called a pouch. The principle around this is quite simple; the stomach’s capacity to hold food as well as the production of hunger causing hormones is reduced, which means that you won’t be able to eat as much as you were previously capable of. Asa result, you start to lose weight.

4.  Duodenal Switch

Duodenal Switch is a complex surgery as compared to the three listed before. As with the gastric sleeve, most of the stomach is removed to reduce its capacity. Additionally, a gastric sleeve is used to bypass the duodenum. This means that the body will also not be able to absorb a lot of nutrients from the food you eat.

Wrap Up

Weight loss surgery may seem like the easiest weight loss strategy out there, but it doesn’t mean things will automatically fall into place. The risk of complications with any type surgery is small but it is important to ensure you choose an experienced and trusted bariatric surgeon. When considering weight loss surgery, it is important to consider the repurcussions of not addressing the weight or diabetes. The benefit of the procedure is that most people will lose most of their weight in a year or two.
