BMI = Weight (kg)/ [ Height (m)] 2

Generally, Bariatric surgery is considered for patients with a BMI greater than or equal to 35kg/m2 with related health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or arthritis. It can be considered for people with a BMI of 40kg/m2 or greater without such issues. Some procedures such as gastric balloon or aspire assist can be for patients with a BMI as low as 30kg/m2. Medicines traditionally used for weight loss can be for a BMI of 27kg/m2 or greater.
